I grew up in northwestern Illinois along the banks of the Rock River. While I began fishing with my father for farm pond bluegills, it was not long before I discovered the allure of stream fishing for hard-charging smallmouth bass. I caught my first smallie in a little tributary creek nearly 30 years ago and from that day forth, I have been “hooked” on smallmouths.
Since those early days I have spent the majority of my free time chasing stream bronzebacks throughout the Midwest. I have fished in excess of forty Midwestern streams, with most of them flowing through the state of Illinois. All this time spent stalking stream smallies has provided me the opportunity to learn where the riverine bronzeback lives and how to catch them on a consistent, year round basis. I am adept with the spinning rod or the fly rod. This knowledge is what I hope to impart to all my Camp Smallmouth students.
I began guiding in 2005 and have been blessed to fish with many outstanding people. I now call Central Illinois home and the Vermilion River is my home away from home. I have a true love for this river and would love to share it with you.
When I am not wading an area river, I can be found spending time with my wife and two children or teaching full-time at Irving Elementary School in Bloomington, IL. In addition, I own and operate Warrior Jigs. I proudly produce some of the finest, hand-tied swim jigs on the market today. I also tie all of my own flies for smallmouths and muskies and sell these as well on a custom-order basis.
